This is a small member of the carp family that is an escapee from ponds and aquaria.
It is curious for its breeding habits which involve the use of a host the freshwater mussel as a repository for its eggs. The female accomplishes this by means of a long oviposter that it can insert into the mussel to facilitate laying of its eggs.
