This starts off as a "witches egg" which splits open to display the scarlet arms which are covered with slime and give off a smell of carrion. This is a method for attracting flies which help to spread the spores of this fungus. It is found near tree roots and has come from southern europe although it originally came to Europe from Australasia during the first world war. it has also appeared in the US where it is known as the Octopus Stinkhorn.
